Venous Access

Venous access devices are typically flexible tubes placed in large veins for patients requiring frequent access to the bloodstream or areas of the cardiovascular system.  Placement of the access device is typically in one of the large veins of the chest, neck, arm, or groin.

Devices are manufactured in various configurations (size, length, and lumens), and materials to cover the wide range of applications.  Typical indications for use include drug delivery, pressure monitoring, nutrition, phlebitis reduction, dialysis, frequent blood draws, fluid monitoring, plasmapheresis, rapid hydration, and infection reduction.

Typical venous access product families include:

  •     Central Venous Catheters (CVC)
  •     Short Peripheral Inserted Catheters (PIC)
  •     Midline Catheters (MC)
  •     Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC)
  •     Ports
  •     Dialysis Catheters
  •     Placement Devices
    • Introducers
    • Dilators
    • Tunnelers and Trocars
    • Guide wires and Needles
    • Connectors

Many venous access catheters are Class III devices that remain in place for extended periods of time (days to years).  Accordingly, the polymers and extrusions used in these devices must meet the demanding biocompatibility requirements of long term implantation.  Biomerics Quadrathane™ and Quadraflex™ engineered extrusions provide the required mechanical properties, oxidative stability, biocompatibility, chemical resistance, and body softening required for these demanding applications.  Biomerics provide a wide range of materials, extrusions, and machined components for these devices to many of the leading medical device manufacturers.
